Copic Markers and Acrylics in Fashion Illustrations

I used to paint my illustrations with comic markers (especially when I first knew about them) before using acrylics and watercolors. Whenever I explore a new painting technique or new paint/marker, I notice how the final result for my illustrations change as a result.

Since I used to daily draw and paint, I don’t always notice the changes in my illustrating style. However, when I finish painting I always get amazed by how I improved. Also, I noticed how different the feeling of each illustration is when using copies vs using acrylics and watercolors. If you paint a lot, you noticed which is painted with copics and which was painted with acrylics. I’ll post my recent illustrations which you can look at and compare the results:

Face Painting with Patterns

So … I’m out of country and that’s the main reason for the lack of updates. I really was planning on writing a different post but it’ll take longer to finish. That’s why I decided to update my blog wit this post instead.

For the past few months I experimented painting on different mediums. That includes paper cups, mugs, and my face! Because of the past few trips I wasn’t able to record a lot of videos, but I’m planning on shooting a new one with me painting my face.

Since it’s all for fun and to both experiment and develop my art skills I used cosmetics to paint patterns on my face. Some of the products I used aren’t pigmented enough for the kind of patterns I drew and the artistic effects I wanted to apply on my face.

Here are my latest attempts with the products I used:

I entered MAC’s competition with this image <3.

This post is a little different from my previous ones. I won’t post my illustrations but rather I’ll rant just a little about life and such.

After graduating from University I founded my own small business (graphic design studio). But I worked full-time starting from 2013 onward. Since 2013 I didn’t take a real rest where I could leave behind my responsibilities a little. I worked alone without even having an assistant which is constantly wearing me out. Yet, since I love my work I’m ready to handle everything myself as I always do.

me

For the longest time I almost create new designs daily. I worry a lot about my daily content especially on Instagram and Snapchat. Hearing constantly about having certain vision, theme, or look for your brand on social media made me overthink which forced me to create random stuff here and there. I’m a designer and I struggle with showing customers/people the kind of designing services I provide in my brand. I get asked a lot about my profession by individuals. The more I answer the more they ask hence I get even more confused about the kind of business I run.

For not less than 3 years I joined multiple online courses for Entrepreneurs which I learned a lot from. Yet, I still get confused on what to show and what to focus on. Working on everything from scratch is not easy at all. And having to do everything alone is another story. But given my circumstances, and the kind of network I built throughout the years, this is what I can give.

I’m taking it easy these days to focus on my upcoming projects and content. I don’t want to post random stuff here and there just for the sake of being active. One of the recent thoughts I had was to delete most of the old images I have on my Instagram feed but it’ll take days to get them all deleted. And that’s a waste of time. Instead, I’ll work on new content then start deleting any irrelevant content. I think this is a better choice. Also, instead of designing a small drawing of a leaf or a flower, I’ll draw a large scale painting and designs. But all of this will take a little bit more effort from my side which is fine. It’s my job in the end. So I’ll make sure I do a great work and put more effort on my work.

Along the way, I met new people. Some became friends and others acquaintances on social media. Sometimes I wonder why I encountered those people but I know for sure that it’s not a mere coincidence. Especially for those who reach out to you first and be the supportive people that you wish to have more of. I still find it a little bit strange especially the fact that I still don’t have the kind of exposure that lets people easily find me. Nowadays with my fashion illustrations I’m gaining too many followers but few years ago, I was struggling a lot. So for certain people to find me was shocking but amazing at the same time. It’s a great feeling to have people admiring your work and getting inspired by it.

One more thing I’m thinking of doing is a new online course on patterns. What do you think? I really am interested in knowing which do you love more. Are they my fashion illustrations or patterns?

It’s been a long time since I sat and worked on a real good pattern design. So I’ll make time during the day to practice my specialty.

Having said all of that, I’m really thankful for everyone who supported me since the first day I started all of this. I’m thankful for the advises and mentoring I received from professionals. I’m thankful for those of you who followed, read and liked my blog posts. I just want you to know that I read your comments all the time and I try my best to respond to them.

Thank you all so much and I wish you a happy and prosperous life!

I draw daily, which is why I don’t always notice any progress I make.

When I first started fashion illustrating, I was on the verge of giving up. I didn’t have my own style at that time and didn’t know where to begin.

But one day I got the chance to look at some of my old drawings and I was beyond shocked. I never knew that I progressed that much already! That gave me a boost to continue.

I took photos of some illustrations I drew last February:

As you can see, my drawings lack lots of details. That, and the size is much smaller than the ones I draw now! I don’t know why I used to sketch them this small, lol. Perhaps one of the reasons is that the sketchbook I was using is small to begin with.

Gradually, I started progressing. I drew almost every single day just to improve. And instead of the small sketchbook I used, I started purchasing bigger ones to help me draw in a large scale. I mean if I want to sell a print customers wouldn’t want to see a tiny drawn model, lol.

As for the materials, I mainly use copics. I have a set of 72 ciao copics + few sketch + few classic markers. Sadly, I still don’t have all shades but I can certainly work with the current shades I have. As for pencils, I love mechanical pencils. They’re clean and you can refill it easily. Especially when sketching, I love using it because it keeps your sketch clean.

For brushes, I use regular ones from any Stationery or crafts store.

Below is my collection of acrylics and gouache paints.

Although it wasn’t planned but I find myself drawing fashion illustrations daily. I first started this kind of illustration last year but at the beginning I used to illustrate my outfits. Then I moved to illustrating fashion and haute couture dresses. I’m having tons of fun searching for inspiration and drawing.

I’ll bombard you with my illustrations ^_^

I have more in my instagram account: anwaar.saleh

Also, I do illustrate live sometimes in snapchat using my brand’s account: Artistakw

GITEX 2015

Last week, I participated at the GITEX 2015 exhibition was held at Dubai which was my very first time!

I heard about this exhibition from my father before but never had the chance to visit it until recently. It was such a great opportunity to be present and look at the different companies who participated there as well. Although the halls were spacious but they were crowded with both visitors and exhibitors. Gitexgitex

I participated in an exhibition in Kuwait before but this was a new experience to me. When you attend an exhibition outside your country it creates a different experience. You get to meet foreigners and helps you seek job/collaboration opportunities.

I went to GITEX with my family to represent my small business ‘Artista’. I serve as both the CEO and designer of the company. Having to manage and design is such a difficult task! But the good thing about all of this is that I get to work on something I truly love. That makes every effort and time spent worth it to me.
