Face Painting with Patterns

So … I’m out of country and that’s the main reason for the lack of updates. I really was planning on writing a different post but it’ll take longer to finish. That’s why I decided to update my blog wit this post instead.

For the past few months I experimented painting on different mediums. That includes paper cups, mugs, and my face! Because of the past few trips I wasn’t able to record a lot of videos, but I’m planning on shooting a new one with me painting my face.

Since it’s all for fun and to both experiment and develop my art skills I used cosmetics to paint patterns on my face. Some of the products I used aren’t pigmented enough for the kind of patterns I drew and the artistic effects I wanted to apply on my face.

Here are my latest attempts with the products I used:

30 digital illustrations for Instagram

Last month I decided to challenge myself on Instagram. Being a graphic designer I thought of designing new illustrations or designs for my social media platforms. After thinking about it I came up with a simple idea of uploading a character design daily for a whole month. It’s both a practice and an engaging process of letting people question whom I’ll post next. For me, I truly enjoyed the process of designing those digital illustrations and happy to see how skilled I am at creating textures, backgrounds, and effects.

I’m posting some of the digital illustrations I designed but you can see the rest in my brand Instagram: @Artistakw.

And here is the process video which you can find in my brand’s Youtube channel:

This post is a little different from my previous ones. I won’t post my illustrations but rather I’ll rant just a little about life and such.

After graduating from University I founded my own small business (graphic design studio). But I worked full-time starting from 2013 onward. Since 2013 I didn’t take a real rest where I could leave behind my responsibilities a little. I worked alone without even having an assistant which is constantly wearing me out. Yet, since I love my work I’m ready to handle everything myself as I always do.

For the longest time I almost create new designs daily. I worry a lot about my daily content especially on Instagram and Snapchat. Hearing constantly about having certain vision, theme, or look for your brand on social media made me overthink which forced me to create random stuff here and there. I’m a designer and I struggle with showing customers/people the kind of designing services I provide in my brand. I get asked a lot about my profession by individuals. The more I answer the more they ask hence I get even more confused about the kind of business I run.

For not less than 3 years I joined multiple online courses for Entrepreneurs which I learned a lot from. Yet, I still get confused on what to show and what to focus on. Working on everything from scratch is not easy at all. And having to do everything alone is another story. But given my circumstances, and the kind of network I built throughout the years, this is what I can give.

I’m taking it easy these days to focus on my upcoming projects and content. I don’t want to post random stuff here and there just for the sake of being active. One of the recent thoughts I had was to delete most of the old images I have on my Instagram feed but it’ll take days to get them all deleted. And that’s a waste of time. Instead, I’ll work on new content then start deleting any irrelevant content. I think this is a better choice. Also, instead of designing a small drawing of a leaf or a flower, I’ll draw a large scale painting and designs. But all of this will take a little bit more effort from my side which is fine. It’s my job in the end. So I’ll make sure I do a great work and put more effort on my work.

Along the way, I met new people. Some became friends and others acquaintances on social media. Sometimes I wonder why I encountered those people but I know for sure that it’s not a mere coincidence. Especially for those who reach out to you first and be the supportive people that you wish to have more of. I still find it a little bit strange especially the fact that I still don’t have the kind of exposure that lets people easily find me. Nowadays with my fashion illustrations I’m gaining too many followers but few years ago, I was struggling a lot. So for certain people to find me was shocking but amazing at the same time. It’s a great feeling to have people admiring your work and getting inspired by it.

One more thing I’m thinking of doing is a new online course on patterns. What do you think? I really am interested in knowing which do you love more. Are they my fashion illustrations or patterns?

It’s been a long time since I sat and worked on a real good pattern design. So I’ll make time during the day to practice my specialty.

Having said all of that, I’m really thankful for everyone who supported me since the first day I started all of this. I’m thankful for the advises and mentoring I received from professionals. I’m thankful for those of you who followed, read and liked my blog posts. I just want you to know that I read your comments all the time and I try my best to respond to them.

Thank you all so much and I wish you a happy and prosperous life!

For the past few weeks I was busy getting more illustrations done than before. Fortunately I love designing and illustrating so it’s not stressing me at all, however, when life gets in the way that’s something else though.

I still am doing all of my tasks alone, hence work is slow. But I’m getting used to being that busy so I guess with a bit more time I’ll be done with my main projects and tasks. Since I’ve been working on the design part, I’ll make more time for managing my business.

Anyway, on the good part I’m posting my recent illustrations. I’m really happy with my current abilities and I’m familiarizing myself with more tools regarding painting my designs. I bought way too many art tools which helped me be more creative.

Aside from fashion illustrations, I illustrated patterns inspired by the Ottoman patterns. To be honest, I’m thinking of giving a workshop on how to draw Ottoman patterns. I enjoy designing Ottoman patterns and when I read more about them I couldn’t help but admire that form of art even more. Also, I’ll join an upcoming Exhibition at the end of this month where I’ll showcase my work. I’m super excited! It’s been a long time since I last participated in an exhibition. Below are some of my recent designs and you can definitely watch me on Snapchat where I post the process or Instagram:

New Designs

I had a lot going on this year. So the past few months (until now, though) have been a true roller-coaster for me. That’s why I wasn’t too consistent with my designs and I got lost too many times. However, these days I’m setting things right once and for all so there is no returning point and definitely no time for tears.

Although I’m a designer specialized in patterns but when people don’t understand what patterns are and such I get confused to and start questioning myself about my own specialization. I tried changing it more than once but I always get back to it. Deep down I’m positive that this is the right path for me but it’s just that it needs some time before it can take off and I start working on real commissions rather than design personal projects.

I bought three different books that talk about the Ottoman patterns. After attending a course on gold gilding I was determined to learn more about Tezhip and the Ottoman patterns. It’s such a wonderful art that made me see patterns in another angle. Prior to that, my patterns were random and weren’t too attractive but nowadays I’m really happy with the progress I did.

I traveled last month for 10 days so I had to stop my work at that time and then got back to it after I returned. The problem is that when I’m motivated enough to work I hate getting distracted but sometimes things don’t go my way. So I needed a lot of time before I got back to work for real. I’ve been having too many distractions lately that forced me to drop my work and start again with new ideas and schedule. Whereas it would’ve been a lot easier for me to work daily with consistency.

These days I’ve been working on Ottoman patterns a lot. Although I yet to learn more but I’m really happy with the latest designs I did using the knowledge I had. Once I get even better at designing them, I’m thinking of giving out a basic workshop for anyone interested. I’m really excited for this experience and I can’t wait to start working on it.

Lately I’m so fond of flowers. Since getting into patterns I enjoy illustrating flowers. Even when drawing Ottoman patterns I heavily rely on flowers. Below are sketches for my latest patterns which I yet to paint:

The part that scares me the most when designing Ottoman patterns is painting. I question myself a lot as to what colors to use. The thing is that I’m not into reds and greens so I end up using gold and black with a little of light pink and white. Instead of blue I use turquoise to balance out the whole design. I love this colors combination for it doesn’t leave the design too bright. I yet to experiment with the painting part for I always spend more time on sketching than painting. So I’ll work on painting my designs these days along with drawing new patterns.

Guys let me know what you think about my designs because I’m thinking of doing live sketching/painting in the next couple of weeks.
